Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No, and this is the main difference from most background removers. They send your photo to their servers. Here the AI model itself is downloaded to your browser and runs locally, so the image never leaves your device.
Why is the first run slow?
The first run downloads about 17 MB - the neural network plus the runtime that executes it. Your browser caches both, so every run after that starts immediately. This is the one-time cost of not sending your photo to a server.
What kind of images work best?
A single clear subject against a reasonably distinct background: people, products, animals, objects on a table. The model was trained for salient object detection, so it looks for the one thing the photo is "about".
When does it struggle?
Fine detail like flyaway hair or fur, transparent and reflective objects such as glass, subjects that blend into a similar-coloured background, and photos with several equally prominent subjects. For those, expect to touch up the edges in an image editor.
How does this compare with paid services?
Commercial services run far larger models on servers and generally produce cleaner edges, especially on hair. This tool trades some of that quality for privacy, zero cost and no upload. For a clean product shot the difference is often not visible.
Why is the output a PNG?
JPG cannot store transparency - saving a cut-out as JPG would fill the transparent area with a solid colour. If you picked a background colour and want a smaller file, run the PNG through the PNG to JPG or image compression tool afterwards.
