Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends entirely on what is inside. Scanned documents and PDFs full of photos often shrink by 70-90%. PDFs that are mostly text shrink very little, because their size comes from embedded fonts rather than images.
What does "Keep text selectable" actually do?
With it on, only safe lossless optimisation runs: the file is re-serialised with object streams and unnecessary metadata is dropped. Text, fonts and vectors are untouched. With it off, every page is re-rendered as an image, which compresses far better but turns text into pixels.
Why did my text-only PDF barely compress?
Because its size is dominated by embedded fonts and content streams, not images. Image-based compression has nothing to work on. This is normal and not a fault of the tool - a well-produced text PDF is already close to optimal.
Will my file ever come back bigger?
No. The result is compared against your original, and if compression did not actually help, the original is returned unchanged and the page tells you so. Turning a text PDF into images can easily make it larger, so this guard matters.
Can I still search the compressed PDF?
Only if you kept text selectable. Once pages are rendered as images the text is gone as text, so search, copy and screen readers no longer work on it. For archival documents, keep the text layer.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser. Since PDFs are so often contracts, invoices and scanned IDs, this is the main reason to use a local tool.
