Frequently asked questions

Which files does this generate?

A favicon.ico containing 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions, plus standalone PNGs at 16, 32 and 48 for browsers, apple-touch-icon.png at 180 for iOS home screens, and 192 and 512 pixel PNGs for Android and web app manifests.

What size should my source image be?

At least 512 × 512 pixels, and ideally square. Everything is scaled down from your source, so a larger square original gives the cleanest results at every size.

What is the difference between "fit" and "fill"?

Fit keeps your entire image and adds transparent padding to make it square - the right choice for a logo. Fill crops the edges so the image completely covers the square - better for photographs.

Where do I put these files?

Upload them to the root of your website, so favicon.ico is reachable at yoursite.com/favicon.ico. Then paste the provided link tags into your page head.

Why does my favicon still look old after updating it?

Browsers cache favicons aggressively. Try a hard refresh, open the icon URL directly to confirm the new file is being served, or test in a private window.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Every size is rendered in your browser and the zip is assembled locally. Your image never leaves your device.
