Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG has no transparency channel, so transparent pixels are filled with white before encoding. If you need to keep transparency, convert to WebP instead - it supports both transparency and strong compression.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

For photographs and screenshots with lots of colour, the JPG is typically 70-95% smaller than the PNG. For flat graphics with few colours, such as simple logos, the saving is smaller and PNG may actually be the better format.

Does converting reduce image quality?

Yes, slightly. JPG is a lossy format, so some detail is discarded. At 90% quality the difference is generally invisible at normal viewing size. Lower the quality for smaller files.

When should I keep PNG instead?

Keep PNG when you need transparency, when the image is line art, a logo or a screenshot with sharp text, or when you plan to edit the file repeatedly - each JPG save loses a little more detail.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs in your browser. Your image data never leaves your device and nothing is stored or transmitted.
